How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?
A practical average for an 8 oz (237 ml) cup of brewed coffee is about 95 mg of caffeine, with a realistic range of 80–135 mg depending on the bean, roast, and brew. The bigger variable is cup size: most "one coffee" servings in Canada are 12–20 oz, so a large cafe coffee can quietly deliver 160–300 mg — two or three standard cups in one.
How much caffeine is in espresso?
A single shot of espresso (1 oz / 30 ml) has roughly 45–80 mg of caffeine, about 64 mg on average. Ounce for ounce it's the strongest coffee there is, but the serving is tiny — a one-shot latte usually has less caffeine than a mug of drip. Double shots and "triple grande" drinks are where espresso totals climb fast.
How much caffeine is in Tim Hortons coffee?
Commonly published figures for Tim Hortons original blend run roughly 140 mg for a small (10 oz), 205 mg for a medium (14 oz), 270 mg for a large (20 oz), and 330 mg for an extra large (24 oz) — check Tim Hortons' nutrition guide for current numbers. Worth sitting with: a single XL double-double is most of the Health Canada daily guideline before your second coffee.
How much caffeine is in a Tim Hortons Iced Capp?
Less than you might guess: commonly published figures put a small Iced Capp around 90 mg, a medium around 120 mg, and a large around 160 mg. That's well under the same size of brewed Tims coffee — the Iced Capp's bigger numbers are sugar and cream, not caffeine.
How many grams of caffeine are in coffee?
Trick of units: caffeine is measured in milligrams. An 8 oz cup of brewed coffee holds about 95 mg — just 0.095 g of caffeine. If you're weighing the coffee itself, instant carries roughly 32 mg of caffeine per gram of powder (a rounded teaspoon is about 1.8 g ≈ 57 mg), and drip brewing extracts about 12–13 mg per gram of grounds, so a 5 g tablespoon brews into roughly 60–70 mg. The calculator above does this math for you — pick a brew method and roast level, then enter grams. The extraction rates behind it come from published coffee-chemistry studies, not guesses — for plain-English summaries of the research itself, the Caffeine & Health hub at Coffee Studies is a good rabbit hole. Curious how freeze-dried instant coffee is made? That's why Shyne lands at 65–75 mg per cup.
Does decaf coffee have caffeine?
Yes — decaf means less caffeine, not none. An 8 oz decaf typically has 2–15 mg, versus 80–135 mg for regular brewed coffee. For most people that's negligible, but three or four decafs in an evening still add up to a light cup's worth.
How much caffeine is too much?
Health Canada uses 400 mg per day as a general upper limit for most healthy adults, and 300 mg per day for people who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Your own line may be lower — poor sleep, a racing heart, an unhappy stomach, or afternoon jitters are the usual signs you've found it. If you're trimming down, a half-caff or low caffeine coffee is the easiest place to start.
The fastest win is usually not quitting coffee. It's checking cup size, moving caffeine earlier, and swapping one high-caffeine cup for a lower-caffeine ritual — a SHYNE serving is 65–75 mg, about two-thirds of a brewed cup. If your number above surprised you, the Coffee Habit Audit routes it to the first change worth testing.
